5 Principles That Make Brands Interesting and Unforgettable
Being well known does not automatically make a brand interesting. What matters is whether it captures attention, challenges expectations, and has enough personality to remain memorable.
Five principles for lasting attention
1. Break expectations
Interesting brands create a gap between what people expect from their industry and what they actually experience. But surprise alone is not enough: the difference should be meaningful to the audience.
2. Make the difference matter
A useful test is to ask: Why are we different, and why should our audience care? If there is no convincing answer to the second question, the idea may attract attention without creating lasting interest.
3. Keep people curious
Revealing everything all the time removes suspense. Hints, unanswered questions, surprises, and deliberate pauses can create anticipation and give people a reason to keep paying attention.
4. Avoid being too perfect or predictable
Multiple interests, unexpected projects, contradictions, and even small imperfections can add personality and depth. Excessive polish, by contrast, can make a brand feel distant and predictable.
5. Stand for something
Interesting brands do not necessarily try to please everyone. They express clear convictions and accept that their position may attract some people while pushing others away.
The key idea: Don’t aim to be different just for attention. Be meaningfully different, curiosity-building, multidimensional, and consistent in what you stand for.
